Capybaras can smell anxiety, and will nuzzle anxious humans instinctively

They are an alloparenting species, meaning the females all share in nursing responsibilities.

Capybaras primarily communicate through ultrasonic vocalizations, which is outside the hearing range of most predators, including humans.

During a drought, several capybara clans can unite into one unified bloc. The normally territorial alpha males will co-operate and back one male to lead them all. This male is responsible for several clans. He puts his life on the line to test the water, survey wallowing spots, and will ensure the herd has met their basic needs. Those too weak to follow are left to die.
